Chapter 94: Debt and Chains
Chapter 94: Debt and Chains
Garen made his way back to the main camp.
His steps were slow and his shoulders heavy as the scattered mini camps became slower behind him. The voices of the mercenaries and criminals grew distant.
Since he was now working for the Morvath family and had a falling out with his entire crew, he had to move out of their camp and into the Morvath Family’s camp.
Even after everything... He did not regret anything.
’So, my sister could die for his brother’s greed, but his brother can’t die for his own sins?’ Garen thought as his mind drifted to the argument.
***
The argument had been short, bitter and loud enough that the nearby tents had gone quiet, listening.
Ardeth’s face had turned red with his fists had clenched. His voice had risen, something that was quite uncommon.
"You went behind my back," Ardeth had said. "You made a deal with them without consulting me... without asking my permission."
"I did what I had to do," Garen had replied.
"What you had to do?" Ardeth had laughed... It was not a happy sound. "You threw away years of trust for a bag of stones and a promise from strangers."
"They are not strangers," Garen had said. "They are the ones who caught Jack and they are also the ones who buried him in the dirt like the worm he is. They did what we could never do... because of you."
Ardeth had gone quiet, his jaw had tightened and his eyes had dropped to the ground.
He knew Garen was right... in his own way.
"Jack’s father saved my life," Ardeth had said quietly. "I owed him... I owed him everything."
"And I owed nothing," Garen had replied. "My sister died because of Jack. Your debt to his father does not erase his crimes. It does not bring her back. It does not fix me."
He had turned to leave.
"Garen," Ardeth had called after him.
Garen had stopped but he had not turned around.
"If you walk out now," Ardeth had said, "you cannot come back."
Garen had nodded once then he had walked out.

’So, my sister could die for Jack’s greed,’ Garen thought as he walked toward the main camp entrance, ’but Jack cannot die for his own sins?’
According to what he had gathered over the years, Jack’s father had saved Ardeth’s life.
That was true but that was not all.
Jack’s father was also the original creator of their crew; he had built it from nothing. He had recruited the first member and given it a name and a purpose.
When he died, the crew was naturally passed over to Ardeth because Jack was still too young then.
Too experience to even be a mercenary talk less of leading... he couldn’t even take care of himself.
After his father’s death, Ardeth raised him trained him and treated him like a younger brother.
But while Ardeth was away completing missions, Jack was left to his own devices. It did not take long for him to spiral.
He started getting into fights. He started running with the wrong crowd. He slowly ventured down a dark path in life.
By the time Ardeth realized what was happening, Jack was already far too gone.
Ardeth tried to save him. Of course he did.
He tried to pull Jack back and he even gave him a place in the crew and made him an adventurer so he could keep a closer eye on him.
But it did not help.
Jack in his foolishness and greed betrayed them for a few extra profit and people died.
Which included his sister.
Garen was crippled... although he could still use his elemental path, he can never advance in it ever again nor could he fight as he used to.
Using a spell took for more mana than it should reducing his overall power vastly making him far weaker than he actually was.
And Jack? Jack had walked away with no punishment. No justice. Just a warning and a ban from the crew.
Because Ardeth still felt that debt. That invisible chain wrapped around his throat.
Till now the crew never recovered.
Garen had tried to understand, he had tried to be patient. He had tried to let go of his anger... to understand but some things could not be forgiven.

He reached the main camp entrance, the Level 3 guard stood there, motionless, faceless.
Garen nodded at him. The guard did not nod back but he had no other reaction to it, he simply walked past him and into the camp.
He found Sorah near the supply area where she was directing workers, pointing at crates, calling out orders.
"I am back," Garen said.
Sorah looked at him with her grey hair was pulled back and her tired eyes studied his face.
"Any trouble?" she asked.
"I had a falling out with my crew," Garen said. "I will not be going back."
Sorah nodded. She did not ask why nor did she offer any sympathy.
"Lady Talia said you would be staying," Sorah said. "I have a tent ready for you. Follow me."
Garen nodded as he followed her.
"The rest of the Morvath family are here so we will be working for a long period of time."
"You mean the convoy I saw coming in." Garen asked.
"Yes," Sorah nodded, "Here..."
Sorah motioned as she handed him a red and black clothes similar to what everyone of the servants were wearing.
The only difference he could spot was a gold attachable strip on Sorah’s own uniform.
"So, you out rank me uhn...?" Garen asked casually.
"Yes... but I doubt you will be working under me for long." Sorah replied. "It just for the duration when the camp is properly set up."
Garen nodded as he kept following her.
